Turn (number of turns)

One turn of winding; the N1/N2 ratio sets the transformation.

Definition

A turn is one complete loop of conductive wire around the core. The number of turns of a winding, denoted N, is the basic geometric parameter that determines a transformer’s behaviour: it is the ratio of the primary and secondary numbers of turns (N1/N2) that sets the voltage turns ratio.

The number of turns follows from the voltage to be obtained, the frequency, the core cross-section and the target working flux density: it is the “volts per turn” quantity that links these parameters. A correct turns calculation is the condition for a correct output voltage and a non-saturated core.

The regularity of the winding of the turns also influences thermal and acoustic performance.

The ABL tip

The turns calculation includes the anti-saturation margin and the on-load voltage drop. ABL Transfo precisely sizes each winding to guarantee your real output voltage, under load and across the whole operating range.
