How to choose: Electrical Transformers

Single-phase or three-phase?

Single-phase for a 230 V supply, from 63 VA to 20 kVA; three-phase for a 400 V supply, from 1 to 1,000 kVA.

Transformer types

Which application?

Isolating an appliance, providing safety extra-low voltage, or supplying a control panel, lighting or a gate motor.

Applications

Which rating?

Add up the power of the equipment, multiply by 1.25 and choose the next rating up.

Good to know

Our electrical transformers by type

ABL Transfo manufactures electrical transformers from 1 VA to 1,000 kVA, in single-phase and three-phase. Each range has its own page, with the price of every rating:

  • Single-phase transformers: from 63 VA to 20 kVA, with a 230 V or 400 V primary and a 12, 24, 48, 110, 230 or 400 V secondary.
  • Three-phase transformers: from 1 to 100 kVA with prices online, and from 125 to 1,000 kVA on request.
  • Toroidal transformers: from 50 VA to 2 kVA, more compact and lighter, also wound in our Gailhan workshop.
  • Autotransformers: 230 V ↔ 120 V from 100 VA to 10 kVA, and three-phase 400 V ↔ 230 V from 3 to 100 kVA, when isolation is not required.
  • Custom-built transformers: four online configurators for your own voltages and power rating, with the price shown as you go.
  • Special transformers: oil-immersed or dry-type MV/LV transformers on request, and a three-phase transformer for HP Indigo presses.

How to choose an electrical transformer

An electrical transformer, or electric transformer, changes the voltage of an alternating current without changing its frequency: a step-down transformer lowers it, from 230 V to 24 V for example, and a step-up transformer raises it, from 230 V to 400 V. To choose yours, you need five pieces of information:

  1. The voltages: the input voltage (primary), which is that of your supply, and the output voltage (secondary), which is that of the equipment to be supplied.
  2. The supply: single-phase, 230 V between phase and neutral, as on UK and European mains, or three-phase, 400 V between phases.
  3. The power rating: add up the power of the equipment, multiply by 1.25 and choose the next rating up.
  4. The IP rating: open frame (IP00) inside an electrical cabinet, or in an IP23 or IP54 enclosure depending on where it is installed; see our page on IP protection ratings.
  5. The connection: screw terminals up to 55 A, cable lugs above that.

Finally, choose between a transformer with separate windings, which isolates the output from the mains, and an autotransformer, which is more compact and changes the voltage without isolation. For definitions of the technical terms, see our glossary.

Made in Gailhan, France, since 1993

ABL Transfo is a French manufacturer: we have been making transformers since 1993 in Gailhan, in the Gard, between Nîmes and Montpellier in southern France. Our single-phase transformers, low-voltage three-phase transformers, toroidal transformers and autotransformers are wound and 100 % tested there. All our isolation transformers have an electrostatic shield as standard, and thermal protection can be added on request. Our customers give us an average rating of 4.9 out of 5, from 286 reviews.

Ordering, delivery and quotes

You can buy our electrical transformers online: each product page shows the price of every rating and every version. Standard models are dispatched from France within 24 to 48 hours. Three-phase transformers are built to order: they leave our workshop within 3 working days from 1 to 50 kVA and within 6 working days from 63 to 100 kVA, and units over 30 kg are shipped on a pallet. A custom-built transformer takes from 48 hours to one week to manufacture, depending on the rating. For industrial electrical transformers above 100 kVA, or any other request outside our catalogue, request a quote: we reply within 48 hours.

For electricians, panel builders and industrial buyers who need a regular transformer supplier, a trade account shows prices excluding VAT, with a 5 % discount, and white-label supply is possible. Any questions? Call our team on +33 4 66 80 14 33, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm French time, or use our contact page.

By voltage: 230 V to 12 V transformers, 230 V to 24 V transformers and 400 V to 230 V transformers.

Frequently asked questions

What is an electrical transformer?

A device that changes the voltage of an alternating current without changing its frequency. It consists of a magnetic core and two windings: the primary, connected to the supply, and the secondary, which supplies the equipment. The ratio of their numbers of turns sets the voltage ratio.

How do I choose an electrical transformer?

From the input voltage, the output voltage, the type of supply (single-phase or three-phase) and the power rating: add up the power of the equipment, multiply by 1.25 and choose the next rating up. Then choose the IP rating to suit the location.

How much does an electrical transformer cost?

The price depends on the power rating, the voltages and the IP rating: each product page shows the price of every version. Three-phase transformers are priced online up to 100 kVA; from 125 to 1,000 kVA, they are made on request, with a quote within 48 hours.

Can I buy electrical transformers online?

Yes: choose the rating and version on the product page, where every price is shown, and order directly on the site. Custom-built models are priced as you configure them.

Transformer or autotransformer: what is the difference?

A transformer has two separate windings, so its output is isolated from the mains. An autotransformer has a single winding, shared by input and output: it is more compact and changes the voltage without galvanic isolation.

How quickly are transformers dispatched?

Standard models are dispatched from France within 24 to 48 hours. Three-phase transformers are built to order and leave our workshop within 3 working days up to 50 kVA, or 6 working days from 63 to 100 kVA. Parcels are delivered to a pickup point or to your door, with the options and costs for your address shown at checkout; orders over 30 kg travel on a pallet with Kuehne + Nagel, in 48 to 72 hours within mainland France and 96 hours elsewhere in Europe, free from €1,000 ex VAT or a flat €50 ex VAT below that. A custom-built transformer takes from 48 hours to one week to manufacture.

Where are your transformers made?

Our single-phase transformers, low-voltage three-phase transformers, toroidal transformers and autotransformers are wound and 100 % tested in our workshop in Gailhan, in the Gard (southern France). Our neon transformers are SIET Resinblock models, which we distribute, and MV/LV transformers are supplied on request.

Do you sell to trade customers?

Yes: a trade account shows prices excluding VAT, with a 5 % discount, and white-label supply is possible. For a batch or a special requirement, we reply with a quote within 48 hours.
