Key features

This single-phase 110V to 230V step up transformer raises the voltage of 110-120 V supplies to that of European equipment, isolated from the mains: connected to a 110 V supply, it gives 220 V; on a 120 V supply, as in the United States or Canada, it gives 230 V. It is the same transformer, at the same price. It is used to connect an appliance, tool or machine designed for European 220-230 V, at 50 Hz as well as 60 Hz. The primary and secondary are two separate windings. From 63 VA to 20 kVA, open frame (IP00), with a ventilated cover (IP23) or in a sealed housing (IP54): it is wound and tested in our workshop in Gailhan, in the Gard (southern France).

Looking for 230 V → 110 V?

To plug in an American appliance in France, it is the other way round: the 220 V / 110 V transformer.

110 V or 120 V supply: the same transformer

On a 110 V supply, it gives 220 V; on a 120 V supply, as in the United States or Canada, it gives 230 V. It is the same transformer, at the same price.

The frequency does not change

On a 60 Hz supply, your equipment receives 220 or 230 V at 60 Hz. Check that its rating plate says 50/60 Hz.

When should you use a 110V to 230V transformer?

  • European 220-230 V machines, tools and equipment installed on a 110 or 120 V supply, for example in the United States or Canada.
  • Test benches and measuring instruments designed for 230 V.
  • Exported electrical cabinets, supplied at 110 or 120 V on site.

It works on 50 and 60 Hz supplies, does not change the frequency and delivers AC.

Frequently asked questions

About the 110 V / 230 V single-phase transformer.

Can this 110V to 230V transformer be used to go from 230 V to 110 V?

No: it steps 110 V up to 230 V. To power a 110 V appliance in France, you need the 220 V / 110 V transformer or the reversible 230 V ↔ 120 V autotransformer.

Does it work on a 60 Hz supply?

Yes: it works at 50 and 60 Hz. The frequency remains that of the supply: check that your equipment accepts 60 Hz.

Does it work on a 120 V supply, in the United States or Canada?

Yes: it is the same transformer, at the same price. On a 120 V supply, it gives 230 V; on a 110 V supply, it gives 220 V.

110V to 220V transformer or 110V to 230V transformer?

It is the same: connected to a 110 V supply, this 110V to 230V transformer gives 220 V; on a 120 V supply, it gives 230 V. 220 V is also the former name for the European 230 V.

Which rating should I choose?

Add up the power of the equipment supplied at 220 or 230 V, multiply by 1.25 and take the next rating up: 400 W of equipment needs 500 VA; 1,200 W needs 1,500 VA, so a 1.6 kVA transformer.

Why do I measure slightly more than 220 or 230 V off load?

Off load, the voltage is slightly higher than on load: this is what compensates for the transformer's internal voltage drop. The difference is a few per cent, and greater on smaller ratings. The voltage returns to 220 V (110 V supply) or 230 V (120 V supply) when the transformer delivers its rated current.

How do I connect a 110V to 230V transformer?

The 110 or 120 V supply goes to terminals 1 (0 V) and 2 (110 V), and earth to the primary earth terminal; your equipment is fed from terminals 3 (0 V) and 4 (230 V). The connection diagram is on the datasheet.

What protection should I install?

On the primary, an aM fuse or a type D circuit breaker rated for the primary current, which is higher at 110 V: 2 A for the 63 VA, 10 A for the 1,000 VA. On the secondary, protection rated for the 230 V current: a 2 A aM fuse for the 63 VA, 6 A for the 1,000 VA. At switch-on, the transformer draws about twelve times its rated current.

IP00, IP23 or IP54: which should I choose?

IP00: open-frame transformer, to be installed in a cabinet or enclosure. IP23: ventilated cover, for a dry room. IP54: moulded housing up to 630 VA, sealed enclosure above that, protected against dust and splashing water. All about IP ratings.
