How to choose: Lighting Transformers

Transformer or LED driver?

Halogen lamps and lamps marked “12 V AC”: a transformer. LED strips and spotlights marked “12 V DC”: an LED driver.

Which rating?

Add up the power of the lamps, multiply by 1.25 and choose the next rating up: 300 W of halogen lamps needs a 400 VA transformer.

Garden or pool?

For the garden, an IP68 waterproof transformer; for pool lights, a transformer installed in the plant room.

Good to know

Our lighting transformers

Halogen lamps, many spotlights and pool lights run on extra-low voltage, 12 or 24 V AC: a lighting transformer steps the 230 V mains down to that voltage. Here is our selection for lighting, with a price shown for every rating:

Transformer or LED driver: AC or DC?

Before choosing a light transformer, check whether your lamps run on AC or DC. A transformer delivers alternating current (AC). It suits halogen lamps, which is why it is often called a halogen transformer, as well as lamps marked “12 V AC”, “12 V ~” or “AC/DC”.

LED strips and many LED spotlights need a regulated 12 or 24 V direct current (DC) supply: they need an LED driver, not a transformer. The lamp's marking or instructions will tell you which.

Sizing a lighting transformer

Add up the power of all the lamps the transformer supplies, multiply by 1.25 and choose the next rating up. A 300 W halogen floodlight needs 375 VA, so a 400 VA transformer; two 30 W LED floodlights need a 100 VA one. With LED lamps running on 12 V AC, go by the power marked on each lamp.

Outdoor, garden and pool lighting

Our garden lighting transformer, the IP68 waterproof model from the Garden Family range, supplies 12 V spotlights, bollards and other 12 V lighting outdoors.

For swimming pool lighting, 12 V AC pool lights are supplied by a transformer installed outside zones 0, 1 and 2 of the pool, for example in the plant room. The installation must comply with IEC 60364-7-702 (NF C 15-100 in France) and be carried out or checked by an electrician. See our garden and pool transformers.

Cable, protection and installation

  • Cable: at 12 V the current is high. Over a long run, work out the cable size to limit the voltage drop, otherwise the lamps will be dimmer.
  • Protection: on the 230 V side, an aM fuse or a type D circuit breaker for a conventional transformer; a time-lag fuse (T) or a type D circuit breaker for a toroidal transformer.
  • Location: an open-frame transformer or a toroid goes in an enclosure or cabinet, in a dry, ventilated place, as it gets warm in normal operation.

Manufacturing and delivery

Our conventional and toroidal transformers are wound and 100 % tested in our workshop in Gailhan, in the Gard (southern France), where we have been making transformers since 1993. Both carry a 2-year warranty. Standard models are dispatched from France within 24 to 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What does a lighting transformer do?

It steps the 230 V mains down to extra-low voltage, 12 or 24 V AC, which is what halogen lamps, many spotlights and pool lights run on.

Which transformer do I need for 12 V halogen lamps?

A 12 V halogen transformer, from 230 V to 12 V AC, conventional or toroidal. Its rating is the power of the lamps multiplied by 1.25, rounded up to the next rating: 300 W of lamps needs a 400 VA transformer.

Can I use a 12 V transformer for LED lights?

Only for LED lamps marked “12 V AC” or “AC/DC”. LED strips and spotlights marked “12 V DC” need an LED driver, which supplies direct current.

What is the difference between a transformer and an LED driver?

A transformer steps the voltage down and delivers alternating current. An LED driver delivers regulated direct current, which is what LED strips and many LED spotlights need.

Which transformer should I use for garden lighting?

For outdoor installation, an IP68 waterproof transformer, such as the 230 V / 12 V model from the Garden Family range, from 20 to 400 VA. Its rating is chosen in the same way: the power of the lamps × 1.25.

Which transformer do I need for pool lights?

A 230 V / 12 V transformer for 12 V AC pool lights, installed outside zones 0, 1 and 2 of the pool, for example in the plant room. The installation must comply with IEC 60364-7-702 (NF C 15-100 in France).

Why are my lights dimmer at the end of a long cable run?

At 12 V the current is high and the voltage drop in the cable builds up quickly: over a long run, use a larger cable size or move the transformer closer to the lamps.

How much does a light transformer cost?

It depends on the rating and the version. Each product page shows the price of every rating and every version, and a trade account shows prices excluding VAT, with a 5 % discount.
