Good to know

Which soldering iron should you choose?

The power of a soldering iron sets how much heat it can deliver: the bigger the part, the more heat it absorbs, and the more powerful the iron must be to melt the solder quickly and cleanly. Our range covers every use:

If in doubt, go one size up: an underpowered iron has to stay on the work too long and leaves dull joints, while a more powerful iron heats quickly and can be lifted off sooner.

Simple, rugged electric soldering irons

The SAMS irons from 50 to 400 W share the same design: an angled copper tip that concentrates the heat and reaches awkward joints, a 130 cm cable for freedom of movement, an EU plug for 230 V mains and a metal stand to rest the iron safely. They are professional soldering irons, equally at home in the workshop and in demanding DIY.

Tips and solder: the consumables

Tips wear over time: once a tip no longer wets with solder, replace it with an angled copper tip of the same power (50 to 400 W). For filler metal, our solder wire reel (Sn50Pb50, 1.5 mm) has its own flux core; its data sheet recommends an iron temperature of 370 to 420 °C. See all our soldering equipment.

Use and safety

  • Always put the hot iron back on its stand and unplug it after use.
  • Wipe the tip on a damp cloth as you work and keep it tinned.
  • Work in a ventilated room: do not breathe flux fumes, and wash your hands after handling leaded solder.

Frequently asked questions

What wattage of soldering iron for electronics?

A 50 to 80 W iron is enough for electronics, fine wires and precision work.

Which soldering iron for thick cables?

Choose 200 to 500 W depending on the cross-section. The 500 W soldering iron is designed for large-section cables and power connectors; the 400 W model suits large parts.

Do the irons come with a stand?

Yes, the SAMS irons from 50 to 400 W come with a metal stand.

Can the tip be replaced?

Yes: replacement angled copper tips are available for every SAMS iron from 50 to 400 W.

Which solder should I use with these irons?

Our 1.5 mm Sn50Pb50 solder wire with a rosin flux core; its data sheet recommends an iron temperature of 370 to 420 °C.

How do I look after a soldering iron?

Wipe the tip on a damp cloth while working, keep it tinned, rest the iron on its stand and replace the tip once it no longer takes solder.
