Key features

This 400 V to 230 V single-phase transformer connects between two phases of a 400 V supply — formerly 380 V — and delivers single-phase 230 V, isolated from the supply: enough to power 230 V equipment where there is no neutral, or to separate it galvanically from the installation. The primary and secondary are two separate windings. From 63 VA to 20 kVA, open frame (IP00), with a ventilated cover (IP23) or in a sealed housing (IP54): it is wound and tested in our workshop in Gailhan, in the Gard (southern France).

Three-phase to single-phase: which should I choose?

This transformer takes two of the three phases: for a few hundred VA or a few kVA, it is the simplest solution. Beyond that, to avoid unbalancing the supply, choose the three-phase to single-phase transformer, which spreads the load over all three phases.

Off load, slightly more than 230 V

That is normal: about 244 V off load on the 63 VA, 237 V on the 1,000 VA. The voltage comes back to 230 V when the transformer delivers its rated current.

Protect both phases

On the primary, both phases go through a two-pole type D circuit breaker or two aM fuses: 2 A for the 63 VA, 4 A for the 1,000 VA; for the 2.5 kVA, 8 A aM fuses or a 10 A type D circuit breaker. The rating for each size is given in the table.

When should you use a 400 V to 230 V single-phase transformer?

  • Supplying 230 V equipment from a 400 V supply without a neutral: heat pump, pump, tools, lighting.
  • Industrial switchboards and panels on 3 × 400 V without a neutral that need to provide a few 230 V sockets.
  • Galvanically separating 230 V equipment from the supply that feeds it.
  • Recreating an earthed neutral for a single-phase appliance.
  • Older systems at 380 V between phases, during refurbishment.
  • Test benches and workshops supplied at 400 V.

It works on 50 and 60 Hz supplies. For high power on a three-phase supply, see the three-phase to single-phase transformer.

Frequently asked questions

About the 400 V / 230 V single-phase transformer, connected between two phases.

How do I get 230 V from a 400 V supply without a neutral?

With this single-phase 400 V to 230 V transformer: its primary connects between two phases of the 400 V supply, and its secondary delivers 230 V to the equipment. For high power, the three-phase to single-phase transformer spreads the load over all three phases.

400 V three-phase to 230 V single-phase transformer: is this the product?

This transformer uses two phases of the three-phase supply: it is suitable for a few kVA. For a transformer connected to all three phases, which spreads the load, choose the three-phase to single-phase transformer.

380 V or 400 V: is it the same transformer?

Yes: 380 V and 220 V are the former names for 400 V and 230 V. A 380 V to 220 V transformer and a 400 V to 230 V transformer are the same unit.

Is it an autotransformer?

No: the primary and secondary are two separate windings, with no electrical connection. A 400 V / 230 V autotransformer has only one common winding and does not isolate the equipment from the supply.

Which rating should I choose?

Add up the power of the equipment supplied, multiply by 1.25 and take the next rating up: a 1,500 W heat pump needs 1,875 VA, so a 2 kVA transformer. The calculator above the table does this for you.

How do I connect a 400 V to 230 V transformer?

Two phases of the 400 V supply go to primary terminals 1 and 2, and earth to the earth terminal; the equipment is fed from secondary terminals 3 and 4. Connecting a secondary terminal to earth (earth-referenced neutral) depends on the application: it is the installer's choice.

What protection should I install?

On the primary, a two-pole type D circuit breaker or two aM fuses rated for the primary current: 2 A for the 63 VA, 4 A for the 1,000 VA. On the secondary, the protection of the equipment supplied. At switch-on, the transformer draws about twelve times its rated current.

IP00, IP23 or IP54: which should I choose?

IP00: open-frame transformer, to be installed in a cabinet or enclosure. IP23: ventilated cover, for a dry room. IP54: moulded housing up to 630 VA, sealed enclosure above that, protected against dust and splashing water. All about IP ratings.
