Key features
This 230V to 400V single phase transformer steps the 230 V mains — formerly 220 V — up to 400 volts single-phase AC, isolated from the supply: to power a machine or device designed for 400 V across two wires, where only 230 V is available. It does not create three-phase. The primary and secondary are two separate windings. From 63 VA to 20 kVA, open frame (IP00), with a ventilated cover (IP23) or in a sealed housing (IP54): it is wound and tested in our workshop in Gailhan, in the Gard (southern France).
It delivers 400 V across two wires, single-phase. A three-phase motor or machine needs a phase converter, which this transformer does not replace: tell us about your machine.
From 400 V to single-phase 230 V: the 400 V / 230 V transformer; from a heavily loaded three-phase supply, the three-phase to single-phase transformer.
That is normal: about 424 V off load on the 63 VA, 412 V on the 1,000 VA. The voltage falls to 400 V at full load.
When should you use a 230V to 400V single phase transformer?
- Single-phase machines and equipment designed for 400 V, on a site that only has 230 V.
- Replacing a 220 V / 380 V transformer in an existing installation.
- Test benches and equipment that need 400 V isolated from the mains.
It works on 50 and 60 Hz supplies and delivers single-phase 400 V: it does not produce three-phase.

Frequently asked questions
About the 230 V / 400 V single-phase transformer.
Does this 230V to 400V transformer supply three-phase?
No: it delivers single-phase 400 V, across two wires. A transformer cannot create the three phases: for a three-phase machine, you need a phase converter. Tell us what you need.
220V to 380V or 230V to 400V: what is the difference?
None: 220 V and 380 V are the former names for 230 V and 400 V. A 220V to 380V transformer and a 230V to 400V transformer are the same unit.
Which rating should I choose?
Add up the power of the equipment supplied at 400 V, multiply by 1.25 and take the next rating up: 2,000 W needs 2,500 VA; 4,000 W needs 5,000 VA. For a motor, allow a bigger margin.
Why do I measure more than 400 V?
Off load, the voltage is slightly higher: about 424 V on the 63 VA and 412 V on the 1,000 VA. It falls to 400 V when the transformer delivers its rated current.
How do I connect a 230V to 400V transformer?
The 230 V supply goes to terminals 1 (0 V) and 2 (230 V), and earth to the primary earth terminal; your 400 V equipment is fed from terminals 3 (0 V) and 4 (400 V). The connection diagram is on the datasheet.
What protection should I install?
On the primary, an aM fuse or a type D circuit breaker rated for the primary current: 2 A for the 63 VA, 6 A for the 1,000 VA. On the secondary, protection rated for the 400 V current: a 2 A aM fuse for the 63 VA, 4 A for the 1,000 VA. At switch-on, the transformer draws about twelve times its rated current; the protection rating for each size is given in the table.
And to go from 400 V to 230 V?
That calls for the 400 V / 230 V single-phase transformer, connected between two phases. For high power on a three-phase supply, the three-phase to single-phase transformer spreads the load.
IP00, IP23 or IP54: which should I choose?
IP00: open-frame transformer, to be installed in a cabinet or enclosure. IP23: ventilated cover, for a dry room. IP54: moulded housing up to 630 VA, sealed enclosure above that, protected against dust and splashing water. All about IP ratings.
