Key features

This three-phase transformer steps up a 3 × 230 V supply, often without a neutral, to 3 × 400 V + N: 400 V between phases and 230 V between each phase and neutral. It lets you connect standard European equipment — EV chargers, heat pumps, machine tools — where the supply is only 3 × 230 V, as in much of Belgium and Norway, or on an older 220 V three-phase installation. Vector group Dyn11, electrostatic shield as standard, 1 to 100 kVA in IP00, IP23 or IP54, and 125 to 1,000 kVA on request: it is wound and tested in our workshop in Gailhan (Gard, southern France).

Single-phase 230 V to three-phase 400 V? You need a converter

This three-phase transformer steps up a three-phase voltage: it does not turn single-phase into three-phase. From a single-phase 230 V supply, you need a phase converter: tell us what you need.

22 kW EV charger on a 3 × 230 V supply

A 22 kW charger draws 3 × 32 A at 400 V + N: the 25 kVA model is suitable. On the supply side, allow for 62.8 A per phase at 230 V, protected by an 80 A type D circuit breaker.

230 V between phase and neutral

The secondary provides a true neutral: 230 V between it and each phase, as on a standard 400 V + N supply. Connected to earth, it gives a TN-S system.

When should you use a 230 V / 400 V three-phase transformer?

  • Installing an 11 or 22 kW EV charger (3 × 400 V + N) on a 3 × 230 V supply without a neutral.
  • Connecting a 400 V heat pump, air conditioning unit or compressor to a 3 × 230 V supply with a 230 V to 400 V transformer.
  • Running European 400 V machine tools, ovens or production lines on a 230 V site.
  • Creating a neutral and switching to a TN-S system on an older 220 V three-phase installation.

It works at 50 Hz, or at 60 Hz on confirmation. It is not suitable for 400 Hz supplies.

Frequently asked questions

About the 230 V / 400 V + N three-phase transformer.

Can this transformer convert single-phase 230 V to three-phase 400 V?

No: a three-phase transformer changes the voltage, not the number of phases. You need a 3 × 230 V three-phase supply to start with. From single-phase, you need a phase converter: tell us what you need and we will advise you.

How do I connect a 22 kW EV charger to a 3 × 230 V supply?

With the 25 kVA 230 V to 400 V transformer: the charger receives 3 × 400 V + N, as on a standard supply. On the primary, the transformer draws 62.8 A per phase at 230 V, with an 80 A type D circuit breaker; the rest of the installation is sized by your electrician.

220/380 V or 230/400 V: is it the same thing?

Yes: 220 V and 380 V are the former names for 230 V and 400 V. A “220 V three-phase” supply is a 3 × 230 V supply, so a 220 V to 400 V transformer, or “220 V / 380 V”, is this 230 V / 400 V three-phase transformer.

How do I wire a 230 V / 400 V three-phase transformer?

Primary connection: the supply goes to terminals 1U, 1V and 1W, earth to PE; the delta connection is made at the factory. On the secondary, the outgoing circuits leave from terminals 2U, 2V and 2W, and the neutral from terminal 2N. The full wiring diagram is on the datasheet.

Which rating should I choose?

To choose your 230 V / 400 V three-phase transformer, multiply the current per phase on the 400 V side by 400 V and by √3, then take the next standard rating up. For 40 A per phase: 27.7 kVA, so a 30 kVA unit. The calculator above the table does this for you.

Do you make three-phase transformers above 100 kVA?

Yes, on request: we also make this 230 V / 400 V three-phase transformer from 125 to 1,000 kVA, in the standard ratings 125, 160, 200, 250, 315, 400, 500, 630, 800 and 1,000 kVA. Choose the rating at the top of the page, below the priced ratings, or request a quote: reply within 48 h.

What upstream protection should I install?

On the 230 V side, the currents in the three-phase transformer are higher than on the 400 V side: for 16 kVA, 40.2 A per phase, i.e. a 50 A type D circuit breaker or 50 A aM fuses. The rating for each size is given in the table.

IP00, IP23 or IP54: which should I choose?

IP00: open-frame transformer, to be installed in a cabinet or a closed electrical room. IP23: ventilated enclosure, for a plant room sheltered from water. IP54: closed enclosure, protected against dust and splashing water.

What are the lead times?

From 1 to 50 kVA, dispatched from our workshop within 3 working days; from 63 to 100 kVA, within 6 working days. Up to 30 kg, the transformer ships as a parcel, with free delivery within France. Heavier units travel on a pallet with Kuehne + Nagel: 48 to 72 hours in mainland France, 96 hours elsewhere in Europe; pallet delivery is free from €1,000 ex VAT, otherwise a flat €50 ex VAT.
