2 x or 3G?

“3G” includes a green/yellow protective earth conductor; “2 x” has two live conductors only.

Good to know

H07RN-F: the all-round flexible cable

H07RN-F cable (also written H07RNF) is the standard flexible cable for portable and outdoor use. Its harmonised code describes how it is made: H for harmonised, 07 for a 450/750 V rating, R for rubber insulation, N for a polychloroprene (neoprene) sheath and F for flexible conductors.

  • class 5 stranded bare copper conductors, very flexible and tolerant of vibration and movement;
  • EPR rubber insulation and a black polychloroprene sheath, resistant to UV, weather, oils and hydrocarbons;
  • suitable for 230 V single-phase and 400 V three-phase circuits;
  • compliant with EN 50525-2-21.

Available sizes

In the code, “G” means the cable contains a green/yellow protective conductor, while “x” means it does not. A Class I appliance (with an earth connection) is therefore wired with 3G cable.

How to choose the cross-section

The cross-section depends on the current to be carried, the length of the run and the installation method. The higher the current and the longer the distance, the larger the cross-section must be; otherwise the cable heats up and the voltage drops at the far end. This matters most at 12 V or 24 V, where currents are high for the same power. If in doubt, have your choice checked by an electrician.

Typical uses

Made-to-length extension leads, replacement flexes for tools and portable appliances, garden and pool lighting, gate motors, site wiring: H07RN-F works indoors and outdoors, bends and coils easily and withstands mechanical stress. Keep a bending radius of at least 3 times the cable diameter when fixed and 6 times when flexing.

It is also the output cable of our IP54 AC/DC power supplies. To terminate conductors on a transformer, see our solder lugs.

Ordering by the metre

The cable is sold by the metre: the quantity in your basket is the length delivered in one continuous piece (50 items = 50 metres). For long lengths or other sizes, ask for a quote and we will reply within 48 hours. Business customers get 5% off the whole site with a pro account.

Frequently asked questions

What does H07RN-F mean?

It is a harmonised code: H for harmonised, 07 for 450/750 V, R for rubber insulation, N for a polychloroprene (neoprene) sheath and F for flexible conductors. It is also written H07RNF.

What is the difference between 3G 1.5 and 2 x 1.5 cable?

“3G” means three conductors including a green/yellow protective earth; “2 x” means two conductors without an earth. An appliance with an earth connection needs 3G cable.

Can H07RN-F cable be used outdoors?

Yes: its polychloroprene sheath resists UV, weather, oils and hydrocarbons. It is the usual cable for outdoor extension leads and portable equipment.

How do I order an exact length?

Enter the number of metres as the quantity: 50 items = 50 metres delivered in one continuous length.

Which cross-section should I choose?

It depends on the current, the length and how the cable is installed: the higher the current and the longer the run, the larger the cross-section must be. If in doubt, ask an electrician.

Is H07RN-F suitable for 400 V three-phase?

Yes, its 450/750 V rating allows use on 230 V single-phase and 400 V three-phase circuits, with the right number of conductors for the circuit. Three-phase circuits usually need 4G or 5G cable, which we do not sell online: ask for a quote.
