Good to know

What does the IP23 rating mean?

Under IEC/EN 60529, the first digit indicates protection against solid objects and the second against water. IP23 means:

  • 2: protected against objects over 12.5 mm, i.e. against finger contact with live parts;
  • 3: protected against spraying water (e.g. rain) at up to 60° from the vertical.

An IP23 enclosure therefore suits a plant room, workshop, riser or sheltered location. Where water may splash onto it, a higher rating such as IP54 is needed; for full exposure to the weather, IP65 or higher. Our protection ratings page explains each level.

Four sizes of IP23 enclosure

Cut and assembled in our workshop in Gailhan, in the Gard (southern France), all are made of anti-corrosion treated steel and let the air circulate: a transformer heats up in use, and the enclosure’s natural ventilation carries that heat away.

Choosing and installing an enclosure

Measure the transformer or equipment to be protected, then allow room for cables, terminals and free space around it so the air can circulate. Keep the ventilation louvres clear once the enclosure is installed. On request, the enclosures can be customised: specific drilling, mounting plate, handles, RAL colour or stainless-steel finish; ask for a quote and we will reply within 48 hours.

Our single-phase and three-phase transformers can also be ordered directly in IP23 or IP54.

Frequently asked questions

What does the IP23 rating mean?

Protection against objects over 12.5 mm (fingers) and against rain up to 60° from the vertical, under IEC/EN 60529.

Can an IP23 enclosure be installed outdoors?

Only under cover. Where water may splash onto it, choose a higher rating such as IP54; for full exposure to the weather, IP65 or higher.

Which size of enclosure for my transformer?

One that houses the transformer, its cables and ventilation space around it. If in doubt, send us the model number or dimensions of the unit.

Can an IP23 enclosure be customised?

Yes, on request: drilling, mounting plate, handles, RAL colour or stainless-steel finish. Ask for a quote.
