What a 230 V to 24 V transformer is used for

24 V AC is widely used for automation, gate motors, control circuits in electrical panels and low-voltage lighting. 240 V and 220 V are simply old names for 230 V mains, so a transformer sold as 240 V to 24 V or 220 V to 24 V does the same job as our single-phase 230 V / 24 V transformer. In a control panel, the open-frame IP00 model is mounted inside the enclosure; in a dry room, the covered IP23 version protects the terminals; outdoors, choose the IP54 version under cover, or an IP68 waterproof model.

230 V to 24 V DC: what you need is a power supply

A transformer never delivers direct current. For a motor, a solenoid valve, a PLC or an LED strip marked “24 V DC”, you need a 24 V DC power supply. A rectified unit (a transformer plus a bridge rectifier) copes with motor inrush current; with no load, its voltage rises above 24 V, then falls back under load. A switch-mode unit regulates its voltage: that is the one for LEDs and electronics.

Sizing a 24 V transformer

Add up the power of everything that will be connected, multiply by 1.25 and choose the next rating up. On the secondary, the current is the power divided by 24: a 250 VA transformer supplies about 10 A. For the same power, 24 V carries half the current of 12 V, so cables run cooler and the voltage drops less over long runs, which makes it the voltage of choice for larger installations.

Which transformer do I need for a 24 V gate motor?

A 230 V to 24 V AC transformer if the gate’s control unit expects 24 V AC, or a 24 V DC power supply if it is marked “DC”. Size it by multiplying the motor’s power by 1.25 and rounding up to the next rating. See also our electric gate transformers.

Which 230 V to 24 V DC transformer should I choose?

No transformer delivers DC: choose a 230 V AC to 24 V DC power supply. A rectified unit for motors and automation, a regulated switch-mode unit for LEDs and electronics.

What size of 24 V transformer do I need?

The total power of the equipment multiplied by 1.25, rounded up to the next rating: 120 W needs 150 VA, so a 160 VA single-phase transformer or a 200 VA toroid.

Can I get 24 V from a 400 V supply?

Yes, with a single-phase 400 V / 24 V transformer connected between two phases of the 400 V supply, as is common for control circuits in industrial panels. Our dual-voltage model, 230 V or 400 V to 2 × 24 V, accepts either voltage on its primary.

What is a 2 × 24 V transformer used for?

Its two 24 V windings can be used separately, for example for two circuits isolated from each other, in series to get 48 V, or in parallel to double the current, following the winding polarity shown on the diagram on the product page.

12 V or 24 V: which should I choose?
