Key features

This 220V to 110V transformer steps the 230 V mains — formerly 220 V — down to 115 volts AC, isolated from the supply: the voltage of devices designed for 110 to 120 V, such as American or Canadian equipment, tools, amplifiers and imported machines. The primary and secondary are two separate windings. From 63 VA to 20 kVA, open frame (IP00), with a ventilated cover (IP23) or in a sealed housing (IP54): it is wound and tested in our workshop in Gailhan, in the Gard (southern France).

The frequency stays at 50 Hz

A transformer changes the voltage, not the frequency: your equipment receives 115 V at 50 Hz. A device marked 50/60 Hz works; a device designed for 60 Hz only (clocks, some motors) may run more slowly or heat up.

Isolated, or a cheaper autotransformer

This transformer isolates the 115 V from the mains. To plug in an everyday appliance that does not need isolation, the reversible 230 V ↔ 120 V autotransformer is enough, from €37.42 ex VAT.

Allow for motor start-up

A compressor or a motor-driven tool draws several times its power at start-up: leave some margin on the rating; the calculator above the table already applies 25 %.

When should you use a 220V to 110V transformer?

  • American or Canadian equipment rated 110 to 120 V: tools, household appliances, amplifiers.
  • Imported industrial machines and equipment designed for 115 V.
  • 110-115 V control circuits in the cabinets of imported machines.
  • Test benches and equipment that need 115 V isolated from the mains.

It works on 50 and 60 Hz supplies, does not change the frequency and delivers AC.

Frequently asked questions

About the 220 V / 110 V single-phase transformer (230 V / 115 V).

110 V, 115 V or 120 V: is this transformer suitable?

Yes, for equipment designed for 110 to 120 V: it delivers 115 V on load, about 121 V off load on the 63 VA and 118 V on the 1,000 VA. It is not suitable for Japanese 100 V equipment.

220V to 110V or 230V to 115V transformer: is it the same thing?

Yes: 220 V is the former name for the 230 V mains, and 110 V the name used for equipment designed for 110 to 120 V. This 220V to 110V transformer connects to a 230 V socket or circuit and delivers 115 V.

Will my American appliance work at 50 Hz?

The transformer delivers 50 Hz, the frequency of the French mains. Check the rating plate on the appliance: “50/60 Hz” is fine; if it says “60 Hz” only, a motor or a clock may run more slowly or heat up.

Which rating should I choose?

Add up the power of the equipment supplied at 110 V, multiply by 1.25 and take the next rating up: 400 W of equipment needs 500 VA; 1,200 W needs 1,500 VA, so a 1.6 kVA transformer. For a motor, allow a bigger margin.

Transformer or autotransformer?

This transformer separates the 115 V from the mains: it is the right choice for machines, sensitive electronics and professional installations. The 230 V ↔ 120 V autotransformer, without isolation, is more compact and cheaper for a household appliance.

How do I connect a 220V to 110V transformer?

The 230 V supply goes to terminals 1 (0 V) and 2 (230 V), and earth to the primary earth terminal; your 115 V equipment is fed from terminals 3 (0 V) and 4 (115 V). The connection diagram is on the datasheet.

What protection should I install?

On the primary, an aM fuse or a type D circuit breaker rated for the primary current: 2 A for the 63 VA, 6 A for the 1,000 VA. On the secondary, protection rated for the 115 V current: a 2 A aM fuse for the 63 VA, 10 A for the 1,000 VA. At switch-on, the transformer draws about twelve times its rated current; the protection rating for each size is given in the table.

And to go from 110 V to 230 V?

That calls for the reverse transformer, to connect a European appliance to a 110 V supply: the 110 V / 230 V transformer.

IP00, IP23 or IP54: which should I choose?

IP00: open-frame transformer, to be installed in a cabinet or enclosure. IP23: ventilated cover, for a dry room. IP54: moulded housing up to 630 VA, sealed enclosure above that, protected against dust and splashing water. All about IP ratings.
